Clinical Overview
Bariatric surgery and non-surgical weight-management options are not interchangeable treatments. Meva Clinic coordinates the assessment of international patients for Gastric Sleeve (sleeve gastrectomy), Gastric Bypass, Gastric Balloon and Gastric Botox in Istanbul through specialised partner medical facilities.
Gastric Sleeve or Gastric Bypass?
• Gastric Sleeve: A bariatric procedure that reduces the volume of the stomach without rerouting the intestine. It may be considered depending on BMI, clinical profile, anatomy, reflux history and treatment goals.
• Gastric Bypass: A bariatric and metabolic procedure that creates a small gastric pouch and reroutes part of the small intestine. It may be considered when clinically significant gastroesophageal reflux or certain metabolic conditions influence the choice of procedure.
Assessment framework: No procedure is universally superior. The choice between Gastric Sleeve and Gastric Bypass depends on BMI, obesity-related conditions, gastroesophageal reflux, type 2 diabetes and metabolic health, individual anatomy, medical and surgical history, and multidisciplinary assessment.
Non-Surgical Options:
• Gastric Balloon: A temporary, non-surgical option that does not permanently change the anatomy of the stomach. The pathway differs by device type, and eligibility and monitoring are decided individually.
• Gastric Botox: A non-surgical endoscopic procedure that does not change the anatomy of the stomach. Response varies between patients, and the clinical evidence and durability are more limited than for established bariatric procedures.
Gastroesophageal Reflux and Pre-Operative Tests:
A history of gastroesophageal reflux can influence the choice of procedure. Depending on symptoms, medical history and clinical findings, the treating team may recommend an upper GI endoscopy (EGD) or other pre-operative tests before the treatment plan is confirmed.
Coordination Pathway from Home to Istanbul (5 Steps):
1. Sharing initial information: The patient shares relevant medical history, height, weight, current treatments, previous procedures and any available medical documents.
2. Medical review: The information is passed to the medical team that evaluates the case. Depending on the procedure under consideration and the data available, additional tests or documents may be requested.
3. Written plan and cost quotation: After assessment, the written plan sets out the proposed procedure, the medical provider, the facility where treatment will take place, the confirmed services, any exclusions and the cost set for the assessed case.
4. The Istanbul stage: Appointments and confirmed logistics are organised according to the written plan. Hospital stay and private transfers are included in the confirmed package; hotel accommodation is optional, on request (separate cost).
5. Follow-up once you are back home: Discharge or departure from the medical facility, fitness to fly and follow-up after your return are determined by the procedure, clinical progress and the confirmed plan.
Transparency of the Plan and Medical Quotation:
An initial enquiry is not medical approval and does not automatically set the final price. Once the available information has been reviewed, the patient receives a written plan stating the proposed procedure, the medical provider, the included services, any exclusions and the confirmed cost for the assessed case.
Available Procedures
Gastric Sleeve in Turkey (Sleeve Gastrectomy)
Gastric sleeve, also known as sleeve gastrectomy or stomach reduction surgery, is a laparoscopic bariatric procedure in which a significant part of the stomach is removed. Whether it is indicated, and the final plan, are decided by the specialist surgeon after a clinical assessment.
Gastric Bypass in Turkey (Roux-en-Y)
A bariatric and metabolic surgery option for eligible patients with severe obesity, including some patients with type 2 diabetes, after a multidisciplinary medical assessment.
Gastric Balloon (Allurion)
Non-surgical weight-loss support: a swallowable balloon capsule that creates a feeling of fullness for about 16 weeks, then passes naturally. No anaesthesia or endoscopy.
Gastric Botox Injection
A non-surgical endoscopic procedure that temporarily slows stomach emptying and supports appetite control in eligible patients, as part of a nutrition plan.
Bariatric Revision Surgery
A second, carefully planned operation for patients whose gastric sleeve, gastric band or gastric bypass has led to reflux, weight regain, insufficient weight loss or a mechanical problem, decided after a review of the first surgery and current tests.
Bariatric Candidate Assessment criteria
BMI is a clinical screening reference, not automatic approval for treatment. The assessment considers weight history, related conditions, reflux, previous procedures, anaesthetic risk, nutritional status, treatments already tried and the patient's ability to follow the recommended follow-up.
Body mass index (BMI) and metabolic profile are assessed together as initial screening references; no single value amounts to automatic approval.
Multidisciplinary medical assessment (surgical, anaesthetic and nutritional), with other specialties (cardiology, pulmonology, endocrinology, gastroenterology or psychology) added according to individual clinical needs.
No active substance misuse and no severe untreated psychological conditions that could affect surgical safety or adherence after the procedure.
An informed commitment to follow lifestyle recommendations, the staged diet and nutritional follow-up after the procedure.
